Marcelo Gleiser is the Appleton Professor of Natural Philosophy at Dartmouth College and author of numerous popular science books, including his most recent "The Island of Knowledge: The Limits of Knowlege and the Search for Meaning". He is a theoretical physicist specializing in particle cosmology—mixing the physics of the very smallest constituents of the universe with the physics of the universe as a whole. He has also worked in astrobiology - addressing the problem of life's homochirality and implications for life elsewhere. To make sense of the world and our place in the grand scheme of things, he studies the emergence of complex structures in nature, focusing on very fundamental questions related to what he calls the “three origins”: cosmos, life, and mind. In addition to writing popular science books, he frequently discusses these topics on his blog 13.7 on NPR.
