How would we use this site to implement one-on-one meetings w/ mentees? Would we do this in the break out rooms or have individual pages for each mentor? or could we use the collaboration tools on each mentors profile so that the mentees could just go to the mentors page and connect there? just so there is no confusion? or are we still planning on using skype? Just spewing out thoughts as they cross my mind. I know it's a bit early

I thought that we may want to have somebody personally contact new additions to the mentor list. I've worked for other organizations that provide a platform for use, but they fail because a platform alone is not enough. If it's going to work, there has to be an organic human network behind it, filled with people who feel personally responsible for its success. Perhaps we should establish a precedent for mentor behavior with our own internal procedures. If nobody else wishes to do this, I believe I can, though I feel those that established the program itself are much better suited than I am. :)

Vooderbar, thank you so much for the feedback. We are currently working to put the mentor program together and do hope to have it a be very much the personal experience you describe. Our greatest hope is that S.A.G.A.N. will be a welcoming community where everyone feels they may have a voice, and an organic human network you describe is essential to building that dynamic. We are in the first run of the mentor program, so likely we will have some bumps along the way, but this is EXACTLY the kind of feedback we are hoping to get to make the program a success. We will definitely keep all of your suggestions in mind as we are growing with this first experience setting up the mentoring program. And please feel free to give us any additional feedback along the way.

Thank you for working to make S.A.G.A.N. and the mentoring program a success by providing such valuable feedback and being actively involved in the community. =)

check out this site using NING http://www.thinkatheist.com/

they have an interesting layout... make it looks more uniform ... pretty cool

We need an "add as friend" button next to people's names when you search/browse for people.

Can we have a S.A.G.A.N. library with Astrobiologically relevant e-books/paperbacks (whichever is more convenient)? Membership fee should be applied to purchase books for the library. Dropbox could be used for sharing the ebooks.

I'm asking this because there are several Astrobiology/Space related books that I would like to read but they are not available at my University library or there's a scarcity. I was wondering if we could have a our own private online library to share books that may be important to most of us.

Yeah I agree that the "add friend" being limited to the profile page is not as efficient as that could be. I've passed on your suggestion. Thanks Rebecca!

Thats a very interesting suggestions Afshin! Thank you! There would be some copyright issues (maybe?) to deal with, but the idea is awesome and one we have played with in the very early stages but never re-addressed again. I'll be sure to mention it again, and if you have ideas on how to implement this, let it be known :D

Hey Sanjoy,

I was thinking, if S.A.G.A.N. could have a Dropbox account where it stores all its ebooks and shares it with members only upon request (read only mode), then people could just log in and read them. Its like sharing pictures with Picasa or something like that. But obviously you cannot distribute them. So something like this will not be illegal. People just need internet connectivity to read stuff online. And S.A.G.A.N. would have the copyright of all ebooks because it bought them.

S.A.G.A.N. now has one-on-one video chat capabilities. Click on "Instant Message", find and select your buddy, and in the chat window, click on "+" and select "Start a Shared Video Chat".
