Hi all! Two updates:

(1) March's salon featuring Ivan Gomez as our host discussing "Genetic v. Non-Genetic theories for the Origin of Life" was a big success with lots of thought-provoking discussion. There is a new forum discussion for those that want to continue the conversation from last month available here .

(2) The March Salon meets at 3/21/13  @ High Noon PST (8PM GMT)!  This month our host will be Heshan "Grasshopper" Illangkoon!! Grasshopper will lead our discussion on the controversies associated with the scientific quest to expand the genetic alphabet, and the related societal implications such as the backlash against genetically modified foods. More details here.

Hope to see you in the Salon Chat on the 21st!

Hello SAGAN Saloners!

The next Salon meets Jan. 10th!!

In honor of the New Year, this month's discussion will engage a thought-provoking look at the Science Highlights and Controversies from 2012! Have a favorite science story from 2012? Was it the discovery of the Higgs, the landing of the Mars Science Lab, or that biology works just fine with alternative genetic polymers? Did these discoveries change science? What are your predications for the hot discoveries in 2013?

To enable everyone to share their highlights, this month we’ll be having a free-form discussion with no assigned host. Wild times in the Salon for 2013!

Sorry I missed this salon. I wasn't yet a member of this group and therefore did not receive the date change announcement. Too bad, because I was looking forward to it...

After our interdisciplinary discussion in the salon today, here's the article to which I was referring. It questions whether astribiology is indeed the way to go towards good interdisciplinary science or whether it's just a "buzzword" topic. Happy reading!
