Event Description

Talk to an Astrobiologist LIVE from the Joides Resolution!

May 22nd @ 10AM PDT on SAGANLive

This month’s TTA will be broadcast from a scientific drilling vessel in the Philippine Sea!

Join us for a special TTA this month, science on a ship! The JOIDES Resolution scientific drilling vessel is a large ex-oil exploratory vessel that was converted to scientific drilling in the 80's. It is leased by the Integrated Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) which is headquartered in College Station, Tx. SAGANet admin and science educator extraordinaire Julia DeMarines will be giving a tour of the ship and introducing us to the science and scientists onboard expedition 350, which is drilling in a volcanic arc just south of Japan.

The expedition is trying to answer the question of how continental crust forms. Earth is the only known planet that has two different types of crust, continental and ocean crust (sea floor basalts), and it is still unclear of the exact process of continental crust formation. Learn about how we are studying our fascinating planet by asking Julia your questions!

Don't forget to check out Julia's Blog documenting the excitement onboard the JOIDES! (
